In many a bosom fondly nursed,

A fiery serpent is my first

When Jesus came for us to die,

He crushed this deadly enemy.

My second is a city's name,

Where Israel's host was put to shame,

Because my first still unrevealed,

Was lurking in their camp concealed.

Upon my whole, pronounced by heaven,

The knowledge of my first was given.

The chosen people gathered round,

And trembled at the dreadful sound.
